Pierino di Silverio, president of Anaao Assomed, Italy’s biggest trade union for doctors, recently described the healthcare system as “close to collapse” with staff shortages, staff burnout, long waiting lists, overcrowded emergency departments, and entrenched inequality between richer and poorer regions.
